Day 1 - Euro Amsterdam Trip

Bluelight in Redlight District means a shemale. A Smartshop is a Headshop, and a Coffee Shop is a dispensary. There are about a thousand bikes on every block and I absolutely love this city. There are so many bikes that when people want to get rid of them they just throw them in the canal. I am sure a lot of those bikes were thrown in by drunk people too. It’s cute, quaint, yet extremely kinky! Staying with my friend Sven, who is from just 15 minutes outside the city. There apparently has been an inhabitance of parrots in Amsterdam in the last ten years. And my friend’s neighbour is up to strange things in the backyard… will post another photo of that, as it is hilarious. There is so much cheese here as well! Old Amsterdam cheese is ridiculously amazing.

Constantly document!

As a student, you never really know what you might need again in the future. I’m kicking myself in the ass that I did not keep all my theory notes from all those hours I invested into certain lectures!

It’s useful and impressive when you bring your overseas knowledge with you abroad. Not only in academics but for future career prospects.

In addition, when I made this blog I made a promise that I would continually document everything that I have done because this year is not one to forget. I have this amazing opportunity that I am sure millions of people would die for… sometimes all you need is the courage to go out and just do it. Easier said than done of course.

Document everything… I’m telling you, you will love looking back at every single moment of it.

NOTE: I am a minimalist and I love deleting things once they have no more use. So now I am stuck in this limbo where I ponder over how much things are actually worth to keep. Again take pictures and jot thoughts down of anything, because nothing is sweeter as recollection!

Dominate that homework!

I’ve been stuck on Facebook all day playing Sims doing nothing productive. We all have those days. It takes one simple step to get you through that checklist you’ve got posted on your wall. So close those Youtube, Facebook, and Tumblr tabs haha and check out 8tracks’ study playlists.

I stumbledupon 8tracks once and its like Pandora and a moodring had a baby. You can search playlists based on mood, vibe, ambiance, or topic. I.E. Oldies, chill, music to listen to when you have sex, etc.

Enjoy! CLICK TITLE for playlist

Surviving my first 12+ hour flight

Not only is this my first time on a flight longer than 6 hours, it is also the first time I will visit another continent! Very exciting I’d say! I’ve been asking everyone and searching blogs on tips to get prepared, get through, and conquer jet lag.

1) drinking water! - a no brainer but on a flight I often try to not constantly get up and out of my seat or ask for an attendant EVER to avoid bothering my fellow flight mates. this time though I’m going to do what in the end will be best for my health and so i’m pleasant company once I arrive in the UK

2) pamper time - getting pampered is the best! I brought these cool cucumber pads, fuzzy socks, a pillow and put a soothing playlist on (some spa music and spanish guitar)

3) looking at the current time according to my destination - I’m hoping that this will help me rewire what time I think it is.

4) My mom put about 6 pieces of bag shards from Forever21 tied onto my luggage so I could spot it easily.

UPDATE:
So the flight didn’t go so bad at all. I flew Virgin Atlantic so the customer service was impeccable and I never got bored, there were at least 60 new movies on its entertainment program and even more new albums I wouldn’t get the chance to listen to unless I was on a plane.

If you’re flying solo, its nice because you might be put in a seating arrangement with someone else that is alone. I met this lady, Pamela who was going to do this huge presentation to Microsoft in Dublin. We ate lunch in Heathrow and it was great company. She told me about her kids and career and inspired me to just slowly take it day by day and don’t jump into a job if it doesn’t feel right.

Downloading that one song on YouTube

You know that one incredible remix that you found on YouTube and don’t know how to get on your Itunes? Well this is how. It’s easy, simple, and best of all… its free (as long as file is under 10mb).

Just go to www.zamzar.com and remember to click URL tab which will then allow you to put in the url and convert into a MP3 among many other choices.

You will then get an email and make sure to click the link under the message
“Alternatively click on the following link to download a copy of your converted file”.
Otherwise, you’ll be redirected into signing up for a membership. Enjoy!

CouchSurfing... Friend or Foe?

is a non-profit online community with its main office located in San Francisco. All hail great things coming out of the Bay Area!

Couchsurfing comprises of two roles: hosts and surfers. There are also ambassadors, travelers, community event leaders, etc. but let’s stick to these two for simplicity’s sake. Hosts allow surfers to crash at their pad, give them a tour of their town, or just meetup for a coffee. Surfers offer an enriched cultural experience, hospitality, and stories!

I can guarantee that this phenomenon is just the beginning. I have been a host and surfer and had positive, neutral, and weird experiences. Many people that I have told about CouchSurfing, think its absurd, idealistic, and dangerous. Fears of hosting a murderer and being robbed/raped are among the most common responses I get. I defend CouchSurfing by having faith in people. You take a leap of faith in knowing that someone would help you out just as you would for them. In the words of Ghandi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. Couchsurfing’s safety and assurance are also backed up by its identity/location verification.
